The Santa Ynez Valley AVA includes two smaller AVAs, Santa Rita Hills, and Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara.

The wide range of climate from west to east, in the valley, permits the growth of a large variety of grapes. In the western Santa Rita Hills where temperatures are cooler, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive. At the other extreme, in the eastern portion Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon do well.

The valley with its east/west orientation is unusual in California. The western end is affected by on-shore breezes from the Pacific and early morning fog.

Progressing from west to east the valley widens after the Santa Rita Hills and temperatures rise approximately one degree per mile.
The purpose of this site is to give a broad introduction to the valley. With over 100 wineries it is not only difficult but confusing to list them all.

Many of the wineries are concentrated in the Santa Rita Hills AVA, Ballard Canyon, Foxen Canyon and Happy Canyon. In addition there are many Tasting Rooms, sometimes several together, in the towns of Los Olivos, Santa Ynez and Solvang.
